Usually the 11th is a house that doesn’t get much attention. It’s just sort of there, and it’s nice, and we know enough to like it. It’s the house of hopes and dreams, and we all understand that hopes and dreams are nice things to have, and are even nicer things to have when they come true. The sign of the 11th place sextiles the rising sign, and the sextile is a configuration of conspiracy and collaboration. So the eleventh, while not vital, is still usually rather helpful.
But it’s not a life-or-death house. It’s not the sort of thing that can make or break a person.
One of its other meanings is supposed to be “friends,” and this is not quite strictly 100% the truth. Friends can certainly evolve out of the 11th, but what this house generally shows are associates and supporters.
The kinds of friends shown by the 11th are not your most intimate friends. They are instead people who all show up for some common reason. If you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew your license (such a 20th-century thing to do!) then all the people waiting with you are 11th-house “friends” or associates. You are all there for some common cause, namely, to transact business with the State that pertains to motoring. While you’re there waiting you might strike up an amiable conversation with the guy next to you, and if you’re waiting there long enough you and your new associate might even learn quite a bit about each other’s lives. You might *become* friends. But it’s certainly not guaranteed! And it’s doubtful that you’ll ever make this individual the godfather of your children, or provide him with a key to your house, or make him a beneficiary of your life insurance.
The point is that the common cause bringing everyone together is a unifying element that inspires amicable interaction. Sibling-style friendship, however, is more a feature of the third than the eleventh.
It’s very much like the “stranger on a plane” phenomenon. We’re here for some specific reason. We’re in this together, whatever “this” is. According to our Department of Motor Vehicles example, what we are in together is a bureaucratic Gobi that forces us to wait and wait and wait until at a distant hour in the sweet by and by some State official will call our number and help us to handle our business.
But the 11th is the 2nd of the 10th, is a “possession” of the 10th, in a manner of speaking, and the 10th provides the ostensible reason for us associating with anyone in the first place, because the 10th is the house of our important actions, and it is the house of the various authority figures in our lives (for the DMV, going to renew my license is a 10th-house action, and the State is surely a 10th-house authority). Of course, afflicted 11th-house planets might incline us to dislike those with whom we find ourselves associating, or they may be bad for us in some way.
Referring back to our Department of Motor Vehicles example, you’re not going to strike up conversations with everybody in the waiting area, although certain situations of public assembly are more vivacious and uproarious than others. It all depends on what if any planets you have in your 11th. If you have Jupiter there, then you might find yourself associating with a jolly and corpulent, or perhaps a learned, or perhaps a foreign person. If you have Venus there then perhaps you will find that you wind up having a “stranger on a plane” moment with a beautiful man or woman, or an effeminate man, or a musician, or a bon vivant. If you have Mercury in the 11th, then you might find that you naturally gravitate towards nerds, writers, or bookkeepers. These are rather silly examples, but you get the drift. Planets in the 11th or ruling it contour and shape the experience of your supporters and associates, and out of all the associates you will have in life those people conforming to the planetary descriptions will tend to be the more important supporters. Actually, the various planetary rulers of the 11th designate the outcomes of your associations, although the planets in it will have a more profound impact on the day-to-day operations of this house.
Because of my own 10th House I find myself here, writing about esoteric subjects. And all of you reading are 11th-house people to me. We’re all here for a common cause, namely to read about astrology.
We’re all in this together.
